While the High Atlas Mountains claim the horizon, the verdant fairways of the 27-hole Amelkis Championship Golf Course lie adjacent to the resort. Amanjena’s 18 rose-toned Pavilions, six Pavilions Bassin, eight Pavilions Piscine, six two-storey Maisons and the two-bedroomed Maison Jardin and Al-Hamra Maison all radiate from the ancient bassin (irrigation pool) at the heart of the property. Set beneath stucco Venetian domes with arched entrances, vaulted ceilings and garden courtyards, the 40 pavilions and maisons are cool, elegant dwellings with Berber carpets scattered over zellij-tiled floors. The sound of running water in fountains soothes, while chaise longues and candle lanterns lend classic Moroccan ambience. Several offer private heated pools. The resort’s main swimming pool is 33 metres long, heated and finished in glittering green tiles of écaille de poisson-cut zellij. There is also a heated children’s swimming pool. Chaise longues and parasols line the main pool’s terrace, which is overlooked by the Japanese Restaurant with its sushi bar, robata grill and informal izakaya fare. Other facilities include a two-storey library, tennis courts, a boutique and a spa with separate hammams (Turkish baths) for men and women. Amanjena is a 20-minute drive from the airport past the king’s palace and Agdal Gardens, a 12th-century estate of irrigated olive orchards and orange trees. Memorable day trips include visiting the Berber villages of the High Atlas Mountains and a day in the Agafay desert including a camel ride and lunch during the winter months or dinner under the stars at night during the summer months.
